MARC and RISE Programs at Xavier

The MARC and RISE Programs funded by the National Institutes of Health Division of Training, Workforce Development, ad Diversity (TWD) are aimed toward increasing the number of underrepresented scientists in biomedical research careers.

RISE (Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement) Program: The purpose of the RISE Program is to increase the interest, skills, and competitiveness of underrepresented students in pursuit of Ph.D. degrees and biomedical research careers.
Eligibility:

  • A sincere interest in pursuing graduate studies leading to an advanced degree in biomedical research
  • At least a 2.75 GPA
  • Major in biology, chemistry or biochemistry, mathematics, computer science, and physics

MARC (Maximizing Access to Research Careers) Program: The purpose of the MARC Program is to prepare underrepresented undergraduate honor students for success in Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. programs.
Eligibility:

  • A sincere interest in pursuing an advanced degree in biomedical science
  • Sophomore status
  • At least a 3.0 GPA
  • Major in biology, chemistry or biochemistry, mathematics, computer science, physics, or psychology

RISE and MARC Programs Provide:

  • Research training with financial support
  • Summer opportunities at both on and off campus sites following the sophomore and junior years
  • Mentoring by science faculty members
  • Attendance at scientific meetings and conferences
  • Special workshops for skills enhancement and preparation for graduate studies
