Seven K-12 schools in the New Orleans area will offer Mandarin Chinese langauge courses, beginning fall 2014. These institutions include four charter schools (Audubon Charter, Lafayette Academy Charter School, Luscher Charter School and Warren Easton Senior High School) and three within the Orleans Parish School Board (Benjamin Franklin Elementary School of Science and Math, Eleanor McMain Secondary School, and Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School of Literature and Technology).
Through Xavier University Confucius Institute, 9 Mandarin teachers from China will teach various language courses from primary education to senior high school. These teachers are funded by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters in Beijing. These schools have sent staff to China to interview some of the Mandarin teachers and visited some k-12 schools in China. The Mandarin teachers are fully supported by the Confucius Institute Headquarter in Beijing. Xavier University and the Confucius Institute will help the schools train the Chinese teachers and coordinate some of the cultural activities.
