Goals
The goals of the Division of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences (DBPS) support and extend the overall goals of the College of Pharmacy as follows:

College goal A - Create a growing body of knowledge across all disciplines with a particular focus on eliminating health disparities.  DBPS strives to increase the breadth and depth of fundamental and applied knowledge acquired by students to assure that they become proficient pharmacists. This is accomplished by incorporating research and scholarship into the learning environment. DBPS is actively involved in ongoing research that addresses health disparities, with a specific emphasis on cancer.   The corresponding division goals are to:
Provide professional pharmacy students with a strong education in basic pharmaceutical sciences.  This is accomplished by (i) offering courses with contents that prepare the students effectively for their careers as pharmacists, and by (ii) revising the number and content of courses as necessary to adapt for the ever-changing health care environment.
Foster scholarly work and collaborative research within as well as outside the division.   By involving students in the various areas of research underway in the division, the students have opportunities to extend their knowledge across disciplines.
Share knowledge and expertise with the scientific, professional, and public communities.  In addition to creating a growing body of knowledge through its research activities, DBPS strives to disseminate that new knowledge through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at appropriate scientific meetings and other venues.

College goal B - Contribute to the Healthy People 2020 goals by increasing the number of African-American pharmacists.  As an academic unit within an HBCU with a majority of African American students, DBPS participates in both recruiting and educating larger numbers of African American pharmacy students than those found in many, if not most, colleges of pharmacy.  The corresponding division goal is to:
Provide professional pharmacy students with a strong education in basic pharmaceutical sciences.  By providing this education to all students in the College of Pharmacy, DBPS assures that a sizable African American cohort will significantly contribute to the Healthy People 2020 goal of increasing the number of African American pharmacists.

College goal C - Provide clinical services and pursue scholarship in a variety of practice settings to include a strong commitment to the medically underserved community.  DBPS is committed to biomedical and pharmaceutical research that contributes to the well being of the community at large. Additionally, DBPS is dedicated to its ongoing efforts to study the causes of and the ways to eliminate health disparities in cancer and other diseases in underserved populations through basic, preclinical and epidemiological research.  The corresponding division goal is to:
Foster scholarly work and collaborative research within as well as outside the division.  DBPS is not a clinical division, but its faculty members do and will continue to collaborate on scholarly research activities with clinicians and other health care professionals in the community.

College goal D - Inculcate our graduates with the knowledge, skills and abilities to care for patients from diverse cultures.  As a minority serving institution with a majority of student hailing from African American or Asian American backgrounds, the DBPS serves to educate pharmacist with varying ethnic backgrounds as a means to increase the cultural competencies apparent in the health care environment.  The corresponding division goal is to:
Provide professional pharmacy students with a strong education in basic pharmaceutical sciences.   DBPS uses direct instruction to educate students on the ethnic and cultural issues that affect disease prevalence and therapeutic outcomes.  DBPS faculty strives to include information on cultural competency and health disparities in basic pharmaceutical courses.

College goal E - Build and nurture a learning environment which satisfies work, career opportunities, and professional growth for faculty, staff, and students.  DBPS aspires to be a place where all faculty, staff, and students will grow and thrive professionally.  The corresponding division goal is to:
Promote an environment for faculty, student, and staff development.  This is accomplished in part by (i) mentoring junior faculty, staff and students, (ii) encouraging and sponsoring attendance to national and international meetings and conventions, and (iii) encouraging and supporting interdisciplinary teaching and research initiatives.
