Greetings Xavierites! Congratulations on your admission to the university. Xavier has a fantastic opportunity for you to earn 3 university credits and study abroad in the Caribbean, all before the fall 2018 semester begins!

Discovering Afro-Cuba

Program Overview

This program includes three tiers of activity.  Tier ONE, the “Preparatory Phase,” will be taught for one week at Xavier and is designed to provide students with knowledge and experiences to enhance on-site learning occurrences in New Orleans and both Caribbean destinations. Tier TWO, the “Immersion Phase,” will be a full in-country ten day teaching and learning program conducted in Martinique/Cuba, that will focus on the historical and cultural development of the countries. Tier THREE, the “Closing Phase,” will involve the return to New Orleans for a summary report on the experiences of the participating students. In both locations the design will consist of morning lectures and afternoon excursions. Participating students will earn 3 hours of academic credit toward a Xavier degree.



Students will arrive to Xavier and check into the university residence hall on July 21.


The first part of the program will be held at Xavier, July 21 - July 28.


For the second part of the program, students will study in Cuba or Martinique, July 29 - August 9.


Students fly back to New Orleans on August 9th and the final class of the program is August 10th.


Thereafter, participating students will join the rest of the incoming freshman class for the beginning of fall orientation.

Program Price

  $4,000 Plus Airfare
  Price includes housing, course fee, most meals and excursions
   We will arrange for a group flight from New Orleans to Cuba/ Martinique

Rolling Admission

  Enrollment in the Martinique Course is limited to 20 students
  Enrollment in the Cuba Course is limited to 20 students
  To reserve your place in the course, you have to:
Submit enrollment form
Submit the $1,500 Deposit
  The balance of the program fee is due no later than June 25th ($2,500)
  Fall 2018 Semester Enrollment Checklist – to participate in the summer program, incoming freshman must complete their Fall 2018 semester enrollment checklist by July 1st

All students who are interested in the incoming freshman summer program to Cuba/Martinique will need to complete the enrollment checklist. The checklist items include:


Confirming plans to enroll by paying the $50 enrollment deposit. The deposit should be paid by May 1.


Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Xavier's financial aid code is 002032. Once you have submitted the FAFSA, you should accept your financial aid award or submit any requested documents to the financial aid office by July 1.


Submit a final high school transcript to admissions no later than July 20.


Complete the appropriate health clearance forms and return them to the Student Health Services office by July 20.


Register for New Student Orientation. The orientation will have information about this year's program. The registration link will go live on May 15.

Note, on June 1, Fiscal services will begin mailing tuition bills to students, both continuing and new. All students must be fiscally cleared no later than July 20 to participate in the program.  Fiscal clearance includes completion of the above items plus payment of at least 50% of the balance due to Xavier.
