III. INDIRECT COSTS (Facilities and Administrative Costs)

Indirect costs are those which are incurred for common or joint objectives and therefore cannot be identified readily and specifically with a particular sponsored project, an instructional activity or any other institutional activity. At educational institutions, such costs normally are classified under the following indirect categories:

  1. Depreciation and Use Allowances
  2. Operation and Maintenance expenses
  3. General Administration
  4. Sponsored Projects Administration Expenses
  5. Library Expenses
  6. Department Administration Expenses

Different indirect cost rates are set for research, instruction and public service activities, and for projects conducted on and off campus.

Federal Cognizant Agency: Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS):

  2. 65.5% of Direct Salaries and Wages, including students, for all on-campus programs
  3. 33.6% of Direct Salaries and Wages, including students, for all off campus programs

Requests for waiver or use of reduced rates for facilities and administration costs, when not required by the funding source, must be approved by the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. Initial requests must be made through the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
