Biology Resource Center

The Biology Resource Center (BRC) is a team of committed professional and peer tutors who provide academic support to improve student's knowledge and understanding of biological concepts. Peer tutors offer tutoring in Biology 1230 and Biology 1240 (lectures and labs) and professional tutors offer tutoring in upper level biology courses.

The BRC has a wide variety of hours to accomodate all students. We are conveniently located in the heart of the Biology Department in the NCF Annex RM 450, and we are open:

  • Mon-Thurs 9:00am-7:00pm
  • Fri 9:00am-3:00pm
  • Sun 3:00pm-5:00pm (LOCATED IN ST. JOES RM 101 ON SUNDAYS ONLY)

Resources Available:

Students have access to one-on-one professional and peer tutoring. All of the tutors have taken and excelled in all of the courses for which they tutor. Students may also visit the center for Group Tutoring sessions.

Module Review Sessions are offered on a regular basis for Biology 1230 and 1240 lectures. These reviews are structured to encourage student participation and active learning.

Practice quizzes are offered to students in Biology 1230 and 1240 lectures that are aligned to module lessons. Additionally, supplemental handouts and diagrams are available to students in-order-to reinforce understanding.

The BRC has up-to-date Life Size Biological Models to assist the learning processes.

Students also have access to computers and study space with access to tutors.

Supplemental Instruction (SI):

The BRC offers Supplemental Instruction (SI) to students enrolled in upper-level biology courses. The weekly SI sessions are peer led and organized to allow students an opportunity to interact with each other as they construct knowledge via comparing notes, discussing readings, developing organizational and study tools,a nd reviewing test materials.

All SI sessions are facilitated by a trained SI leader, a student who has completed the course and earned a grade of at least a B.
