Xavier University of Louisiana is committed to provide our students, faculty, staff and greater community with a safe and protected environment. Xavier’s Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program provides a policy and procedures that will:
- enhance life safety-response measures
- meet regulatory compliance
- standardized guidelines for the use of automated external defibrillators
- continuity and consistency across campus in AED installation and maintenance • use by authorized trained individuals at Xavier University of Louisiana
The goal of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program is to increase the rate of survival of people who experience sudden cardiac arrest. AED programs are designed to provide equipment and training as an important means for providing enhanced life safety response measures. AEDs make it possible for lay responders to administer defibrillation prior to the arrival of emergency medical services (EMS). The AED will not shock a person unless it detects a shockable rhythm or cardiac abnormality (ventricular fibrillation).
The automated external defibrillator policy is not intended to operate as an agreement between Xavier University of Louisiana and any individuals requiring the use of an AED nor does it address every possible situation in which a cardiac arrest occurs requiring the use of an AED. As with any emergency device please be reminded that tampering with such a unit may result in disciplinary action for the person involved.
