Medical Emergencies

In the event of a medical emergency with threat to life or limb dial 911 immediately, notify Campus Police (504)520-7490, Student Health Services (504)520-7396, and the residence hall manager @ KD (504)520-7350, St. Mike’s (504)520-7347, LLC (504)520-7799 and DePorres (504)520-5800.

Medical Emergencies occurring during regular office hours, Monday thru Friday 8:30AM - 4:30PM: Notify → Campus Police, and Student Health Services.

On Campus - After hours, weekend, holidays - notify Campus Police and the residence hall manager on duty.

Off Campus - Go to nearest hospital (see below) emergency department or call 911

Medical Emergency Protocol

The Staff of Student Health Services shall triage all emergency calls during Student Health Services clinic normal operating hours of (Monday – Friday 8:30AM - 4:30PM)

Student Health Services may be consulted at any time to participate in the decision to refer medical treatment outside of Student Health Services. A member of the medical staff will be available to participate in this decision.

Non-Life-Threatening Emergencies and Non-Emergencies 

Student Health Services medical staff is available Monday – Friday 8:30AM - 4:30PM to all enrolled Xavier students. Students are seen on a walk-in basis, first come first serve. Emergencies will take precedence over all walk-ins. If the condition warrants an appointment, an appointment will be scheduled.

The medical staff will be available to participate in the decision as to the proper location for treatment, i.e., whether care should be rendered at the Student Health Services, an off-campus physician office or an emergency department.

EMS Contact- Receiving Emergency Medical Services On Campus

  1. When placing the call, the emergency medical services (EMS) personnel should be directed to the appropriate entry streets which are closest to the emergency sites.
  2. Notify Student Health Services and Campus Police that EMS has been called and request campus police provide a unit to be available to escort the EMS unit to the exact location of the emergency.
  3. The exact location of the emergency should be provided to EMS and Campus Police/Student Health Services - building name and/or number, floor, and room number must be given.

Off-Campus Transportation 

  1. Transportation, if necessary, is available to an off-campus medical facility by cab or ambulance. Any fees incurred are the responsibility of the student in any situation.

On-Campus Transportation 

  1. A student who is ill or injured and is unable to get to Student Health Services on their own may call the clinic @ (504)520-7396 or Campus Police @ (504)520-7490 for transportation assistance. Campus Police will transport a nurse to the site and transport the nurse and student back to Student Health Services clinic. This service is reserved only for situations where the student is unable to ambulate or drive themselves to Student Health Services.
