Ja'Leaha Thornton, a freshman public health pre-med major with a double minor in psychology and biology, is no stranger to taking advantage of presented opportunities. Recently, Thornton was overjoyed at her acceptance into the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) internship at the University of Florida. SHPEP is a summer health professions program geared towards enrichment, focusing on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health profession. A six-week program, Thornton began her time with SHPEP on May 15.

A Belle Glade, Florida, native, Thornton has a promising future. With her strong perseverance, she has already completed enough college credits to be classified as a sophomore at Xavier, though she is only on the cusp of completing her first year. Through SHPEP, Thornton will have the opportunity to interact with other scholars and engage in case-based learning and interprofessional experiences. SHPEP also offers workshops on successful study strategies and provides scholars with the skills necessary to prepare for the rigors of professional school.

"By giving back to my community, peers, and Xavier family, I plan to use this internship to leave a legacy as someone who sought better for her society," Thornton said. She also shared her current aspirations of becoming a doctor. "I have already begun documenting my professional journey on Instagram and other social platforms at @Diaryofamedwmn, so others can see it and gain specific guidance and knowledge."

Thornton was selected from hundreds of applicants for her “hard work, determination, and passion for the health professions.” Though she is only completing her first year at Xavier University of Louisiana, Thornton is already an embodiment of the university’s mission to promote a more just and humane society. She also acknowledges that her great support system at Xavier and beyond helped her get where she is.
