Reimagining Campus Safety Part 2: Lighting on Campus

Part 2: Illuminating a Bright Future

Quickly approaching the celebration of its first 100 years of service, Xavier University of Louisiana has amped up its dedication to enhancing safety and convenience across its dynamic campus community. Xavier is committed to providing students with an exceptional and innovative learning environment that matches their boundless potential. Closing out its three-part series on “Reimagining Campus Safety,” the university highlights its innovations in campus lighting

Tatum Register, a Xavier student from Jacksonville, Florida, finds comfort in the security provided by strategically placed emergency posts around campus. Yet, Register and her peers desire even greater peace of mind, particularly around areas like the annex building, where enhanced lighting would elevate their sense of security. Their aspirations drive the university’s efforts to create a campus environment that aligns with the ambitions of its students.

Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (SVP) at Xavier, Ron Brade, is a staunch advocate of the vision of Xavier’s foundress, St. Katharine Drexel. SVP Brade recently joined his team on a nighttime ride-along. This firsthand experience revealed the transformative impact of improved lighting and grounds modifications on campus safety and perception. SVP Brade emphasizes the importance of addressing even minor issues to ensure a positive atmosphere for all.

With a clear agenda in hand, Bruce Hamilton, Director of Xavier’s Office of Facilities Planning and Management, sprang into action, collaborating with Entergy of New Orleans to enhance campus lighting.

“I appreciate how efficient my Entergy representative is; she gets the job done,” said Hamilton.

Xavier is currently implementing the “Entergy Smart Program,” which focuses on energy efficiency to make the entire campus energy efficient. The university is currently using some of the new lighting in Xavier South.

Hamilton and his team are also dedicated to beautifying the campus by addressing overgrown areas. One major concern was the city canal that divides the campus. Through strategic tree removal, the facilities team has created a beautiful and usable space for students while also enhancing visibility to address safety concerns. Thanks to initiatives like new trash receptacles funded by “Keep Louisiana Beautiful,” Xavier is able to continue progressing in its endeavors to reflect its commitment to reimagining campus life and sustainability.

As Xavier continues to enhance campus safety and build meaningful partnerships with city leaders, all in its campus community are welcome to join its journey of growth and community empowerment. The Xavier family will persevere in illuminating a brighter future for all who call Xavier home!
