President Verret Issues Statement on the Passing of Pope Francis

Pope Francis

We at Xavier University of Louisiana are deeply saddened by the passing of the Holy Father. A gracious spiritual leader, Pope Francis led with thoughtfulness and love and challenged Christians and all people of faith to honor the dignity of all persons and to engage with love and compassion.

I had the great joy of visiting Rome with fellow presidents of Catholic universities and colleges. At that time, Pope Francis gave us a powerful message that remains with me today—the church lives through each of us. The Holy Father made clear that responsibility and accountability in the church derive from our baptism and that each of us is called to ring about the Kingdom of God and to live as examples of Christ.

Thus, we who have been baptized are called to build and sustain the Church. He gave a gift by reminding us, as university leaders and students, staff, and faculty, that we are entrusted to build and live its teachings.

We are blessed to have served with the guidance of such a benevolent Pontiff. Please join me in offering prayers of gratitude for our dearly departed Holy Father. May he rejoice in the Divine Presence.

Reynold Verret,
President
