Xavier College of Pharmacy to Host 12th Annual Health Disparities Conference

New Orleans LA – The Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities, Research and Education at the Xavier University of Louisiana College of Pharmacy will host its 12th Health Disparities Conference April 08–10, 2019 at the Sheraton Hotel in New Orleans LA.

Healthy People 2020, the World Health Organization, and other U.S. health initiatives share the importance of social determinants and health equity in improving overall health outcomes. The National Partnership for Action to End Health Disparities and the National Prevention and Health Promotion Strategy speak to the importance of education, childcare, housing, business, law, media, community planning, transportation, and agriculture as upstreaming and downstreaming approaches to improve health across the life course.

This year’s conference brings together like-minded individuals and organizations who are committed to research and programs, practices, and policies in these areas that affect the health of individuals, families, and communities. Opening keynote speaker for the conference will be Eliseo Pérez-Stable, MD, Director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Leaders from AARP, American Medical Association, American Pharmacists Association and National Medical Association join the discussion in this year’s program, titled “Linking Upstream Determinants to Downstream Interventions – Targeting Health Disparities & Health Equity.”

Conference participants will include public and community health leaders, health policy makers, researchers, health educators, clinicians (pharmacists, physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and allied health professionals) and students whose work incorporates the use of multidisciplinary partnerships that build collaborations to eliminate health disparities and achieve health equity. Discussion on critical topics include mental health, opioids and substance use; increasing the numbers of African American physician-scientists, especially Black Males; Data Science in Relationship to Digital Innovations; HIV and Sexual Health; Adverse Childhood Experiences; Maternal and Child Health; and racism or social justice, to name a few.

The overall goal of the conference is to further participants’ understanding of the inter-relationship between upstream and downstream approaches to preventing health disparities across the life course. Its speakers will provide ways to integrate these approaches in order to provide a more comprehensive approach. At the end of the conference, participants will have a better understanding of how to incorporate both upstream and downstream approaches across the life course in preventing disparate health outcomes at both an individual and population level.

Funding for the conference is made possible in part by a grant from the National Institute on Minority Health and Disparities (NIMHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
