Xavier Alum & Board of Trustees Member Dr. Gilda Barabino Selected as President-elect of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)

Xavier Board of trustees member Dr. Gilda Barabino, President of Olin College of Engineering and Xavier alum, has been selected as president-elect of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The AAAS is the world's largest scientific society. 

Dr. Barabino continues to be an inspiration and example of Xavier excellence, not only in her scientific achievements but also in her advocacy for racial equity in the STEM fields. 

She is a renowned researcher in the areas of sickle cell disease and cellular and tissue engineering. Beyond serving as their President, Dr. Barabino also teaches as a biomedical and chemical engineering professor at Olin. Before her appointment at Olin, she was the Dean of the Grove School of Engineering at the City College of New York. 

Throughout her career, she has been a voice for racial diversity in the sciences. Dr. Barabino founded the National Institute for Faculty Equity and is a member of the National Academies’ Roundtable on Black Men and Black Women in Science, Engineering and Medicine.
