Myriad Genetics Supports Xavier University of Louisiana Genetic Counseling Program to Advance Health Equity, Data and Informatics

Myrad Donation

Xavier University of Louisiana today announced that Myriad Genetics (MYGN:NASDAQ), a leader in genetic testing and precision medicine, will support its new Genetic Counseling Program with a donation focusing on the advancement of healthcare equity, data and informatics. Myriad Genetics’ support is among the university’s first collaborations designed to support professional diversity, reduce health disparities and increase access to data-driven genetic insights.

Genetic counselors advise individuals and families affected by or at risk for genetic disorders and support them in making informed healthcare decisions. The donation from Myriad Genetics will support the initial development and launch of Xavier’s Genetic Counseling program, including student scholarships, internships, and joint research initiatives.

“The development of this program reflects Xavier honoring our mission to strive for a more just and humane society through education,” said Dr. Anne McCall, provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs at Xavier University of Louisiana. “This program will allow us to focus on prioritizing healthcare and research in medicine. Xavier has been a leader in serving and overcoming health disparities for almost a century, and we, as leaders in education, science and health, are proud to partner with an industry leader like Myriad Genetics to develop this program and help expand opportunities for our students.”

Recent studies reveal only two percent of genetic counselors currently identify as Black or African American. The Genetic Counseling program at Xavier will be implemented in partnership with Ochsner Health and will help foster diversity in the genetic counseling industry and advance the next generation of genetic counselors of color. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for genetic counselors is projected to increase 21 percent over the next decade, much faster than the average of other occupations.

“As part of our mission to expand health and well-being for all, Myriad Genetics is committed to advancing health equity and supporting new initiatives that advance scientific innovation and help improve outcomes for underserved populations,” said Gwendolyn Turner, head of diversity, equity, inclusion and engagement at Myriad Genetics. “Xavier is a prestigious Historically Black university with a rich legacy of preparing students for the workforce. New programs in genetic counseling and informatics will help cultivate the next generation of genetic counselors of color and expand diversity in healthcare.”

As the program progresses, Xavier and Myriad will jointly explore additional opportunities to support students, research and academic advancements. Myriad Genetics is committed to ongoing collaboration with Xavier and other partners impacting the lives of students, the work of faculty and university leadership.

Being America’s only historically Black and Catholic University is only the first among many distinctions that have set Xavier University of Louisiana apart for more than nine decades. Despite its relatively small size, Xavier is a nationally recognized leader in STEM and the health sciences, producing more African American students who graduate from medical schools each year than any other university in the United States. Its College of Pharmacy is among the top producers of African American pharmacists. Its liberal arts-based programs in such areas as art, business, education, psychology, and political science – as well as recent additions in bioinformatics, data science, neuroscience, crime and social justice, and jazz studies – offer students an unbeatable combination of traditional classroom study, hands-on research, service-learning opportunities, and life experiences.

The winning Xavier formula provides students with a well-balanced curriculum and an environment that nurtures their intellect and feeds their souls.
