The late John T. Scott is known as one of the most influential New Orleans artists of the 20th century. In honor of his legacy, the Helis Foundation John Scott Center was opened in recognition of his significant contributions, providing a space to admire Scott’s art and contributions to the development of the arts culture in the Crescent City. Scott received his Bachelor of Arts from Xavier and returned to the university to teach as a professor for 42 years. His abstract sculptures can be found across the city, and he has served as a cultural influence for artists worldwide. Scott was known for fusing contemporary techniques with references to traditional African arts and Panafrican themes. A New Orleans native, the city's unique customs also shaped his work, particularly African American-born influences, including jazz and the civil rights movement. A grand-opening celebration was held on September 10, 2022, and the center is open Thursday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m.
