Xavier alumnus and esteemed artist Ayo Scott (‘03) was honored at the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund’s (NOTCF) inaugural gala. Scott received the “Visual Arts and Crafts” award and was one of eight cultural bearers to be recognized at NOTCF’s gala.  

NOTCF’s mission is to support New Orleans’ cultural industries and culture bearers through partnerships, grants, and programs to advance sustainable tourism. They are dedicated to supporting the local cultural economy and tourism offerings. The event was held to channel revelry, promote inclusivity, and create an immersive experience celebrating those who contribute to the vibrant, unique culture of New Orleans.  

Scott was nominated in the “Established Artist” category for the visual arts and crafts cultural sector. Other cultural sectors included culinary arts, design, entertainment, literary arts and humanities, and preservation. An emerging artist and a lifetime achievement honoree were also awarded at the gala, with each honoree receiving awards designed by local visual artist and sculptor Sheleen Jones.  

Scott was nominated for the award by NOTCF board members and community members. It was after a phone call that he learned of both his nomination and selection for the award. 

“Being selected for this award is a huge honor and is incredibly humbling. This city is filled with incredible artists and to even be considered for such an award is beyond anything I could have ever imagined,” said Scott.  

A New Orleans native, Scott honored his heritage and culture through his exhibition, Holding On: Reaching Forward, Selected Works by Ayo Scott, displayed in Xavier’s art gallery last year. Ayo Scott continues to exemplify Xavier excellence as a visual voice of preservation for the city’s culture.
