In the bustling corridors of academia, surrounded by the hushed whispers of ambition and dreams, one name echoes with a resounding triumph – Tatum Register. A sophomore Political Science major, Tatum has not only etched her name in the annals of academic excellence but has soared to new heights with a prestigious accolade: the 2024 Critical Language Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Amidst a sea of aspiring scholars, Tatum emerged victorious, securing her place among the esteemed few awarded this distinguished honor. Over 500 U.S. undergraduate and graduate students vied for this coveted opportunity, a testament to its unparalleled significance. From a staggering pool of more than 5,000 applicants representing institutions across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, Tatum's brilliance shone brightest.

The letter of award, a beacon of her success, bears testament to the gravity of her achievement. With it comes not just a scholarship, but a gateway to new horizons – a journey to Tamkang University, nestled in the vibrant heart of New Taipei City, Taiwan. From June 18th to August 24, 2024, Tatum will immerse herself in the rich tapestry of Taiwanese culture, guided by the auspices of the CLS Program.

“I am extremely excited to have been selected for the highly prestigious U.S. Department of State's Critical Language Scholarship, which will allow me to study Chinese in Taiwan this summer. I look forward to strengthening my fluency in the Chinese language as well as my knowledge in Taiwanese culture. My ultimate goal is to become fluent in Mandarin,” said Tatum Register. Once that goal is achieved, Register’s sights will be set on what she sees for her future. “My career aim is to become a United States Diplomat. Thus, this intercultural language experience will contribute to my progress in meeting my goal.” said Register.

For now, as the XULA Chinese Language Representative, she plans on using her experience to encourage other Xavierites to take advantage of Xavier’s outstanding and unique Chinese Language program. She hopes to inspire students to apply to CLS and pursue opportunities to study critical-need languages abroad.

But this scholarship is more than just a ticket to adventure; it's a testament to Register's unwavering dedication and passion. Endowed with a full-ride scholarship, she embarks on this odyssey with every resource at her disposal – learning materials, international travel, visa application fees, room and board, and program-sponsored travel all accounted for. It's a journey that promises not just linguistic fluency but a deeper understanding of global interconnectedness.

At the heart of the CLS Program lies a profound mission – to cultivate a cadre of linguistically adept Americans, poised to navigate an increasingly complex world. Tatum embodies this ethos, her selection a testament to her potential as a global citizen. Beyond mere language acquisition, she represents a beacon of hope, a bridge between cultures, and a harbinger of diplomatic prowess.

As she sets foot on Taiwanese soil, Tatum carries with her not just the weight of expectation but the boundless promise of a brighter, more interconnected future. The CLS Program may mark the beginning of her journey, but its impact will resonate far beyond its duration. For Tatum Register, the world is not just a stage – it's a classroom, and she's ready to embrace its lessons with open arms.
