Xavier Golden Sound Director Quarterfinalist for Music Educator Award

Xavier Golden Sound Director Quarterfinalist for Music Educator Award

Darren Rodgers Jr., director of Xavier University of Louisiana’s Golden Sound Marching Band, has been announced as a quarterfinalist for the 2025 Music Educator Award by the Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Museum. This prestigious award is given to current educators—from kindergarten through college in both public and private schools—who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who advocate for the ongoing inclusion of music education in schools.

“Won’t stop til I Get It [sic],” Rodgers posted on social meeting, sharing the announcement. “I’m a Quarterfinalist. Pray with me [sic]!”

This year’s quarterfinalists hail from 202 cities and were chosen from more than 2,400 initial nominations. Additionally, 159 legacy applicants from 2024 are also eligible for this year’s award. Semi-finalists for the 2025 Music Educator Award will be announced later this year. The ultimate recipient will be celebrated during GRAMMY Week 2025.

Beyond Xavier, Rodgers also acts as assistant band director at St. Augustine High School and as director of bands at the Roots of Music, a New Orleans-based, non-profit organization that empowers youth through music education, academic support and mentorship while preserving and promoting the unique musical and cultural heritage of the city. Rodgers’ nomination recognizes his incredible contributions to music education through his work at St. Augustine, his dedication to the Roots of Music, and his excellent directorship of the Golden Sound.

Formerly known as the Xavier University Pep Band, the Golden Sound was founded in 2019 as a small band club and christened under its new name in January of 2023 when Xavier Athletics and Music Divisions joined together with an ambitious mission to cultivate the band into a powerhouse. The Golden Sound has participated in many festivities around Xavier’s campus and other events throughout the city, including the rich culture of New Orleans’s parades during Mardi Gras season and other celebrations.

Each year, one recipient is selected from among 10 finalists for the Music Educator Award and recognized for their profound impact on students’ lives. If Rodgers is the finalist, he will be the 11th annual honoree and will be flown to Los Angeles to attend the 67th GRAMMY Awards and participate in various GRAMMY week events.
