Alums Kevin Barnes ’11 (Outstanding Young Alumnus) and Dionne Darnum ’85 (Alumnus of the Year) were Xavier’s representatives at the 73rd Annual UNCF National Alumni Council Leadership Conference’s Legacy Awards Gala, held in Atlanta GA. At the event they received the UNCF-NAP Hall of Honor and their respective awards in recognition of their significant contributions to their alma mater, their professions and the community. New Orleans native and Xavier alum, Raymond J. Williams made a mark on black history when his unit was the first to integrate the American military. Williams joined the United States Marine Corps during a time when the Marines were still heavily segregated. He served as a Corporal in the all-black Montford Point Marines during World War II. The Montford Point Marines were the black men who enlisted in the Marines from 1942-1949, stationed near Montford Point in Jackson, North Carolina.Alumni News
