Tobacco Cessation Program

We are proud to announce our commitment to a Tobacco-Free/Smoke-Free XU.  The Tobacco-Free/Smoke-Free Policy is part of an ongoing effort to create a healthy environment for all individuals who live, learn, visit and work on our campus.

Student Health Services and The Counseling & Wellness Center offers tobacco cessation support to all students, faculty and staff members who have the desire to quit using tobacco.

  • Health Screening

Prior to smoking cessation coaching, participants will meet with a health care provider in Student Health Services. Here a medical screening (i.e. medical history, blood pressure, etc.) will be done and any medical concerns discussed. Screenings are available Monday 'Äì Friday 8:30AM 'Äì 4:30PM The participant is then referred to the Counseling & Wellness Center.

  • Cessation Coaching Sessions

Make your appointment for an individual or group smoking cessation coaching session through XU Counseling & Wellness Center(504)520-7315.

  • Individual Sessions 'Äì Participants will meet individually with a counselor for 30 'Äì 60 minute sessions that are tailored to their specific needs.
  • Group Sessions - Group smoking cessation meetings are held weekly.¬† The meetings are 30 - 60 minutes each (depending on group size)

20 Minutes After Quitting  Your heart rate drops.
2 Weeks to 3 Months Your heart attack risk begins to drop. Your lung function begins to improve.
1 Year Your added risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker's.
5 Years Your stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker's 5-15 years after quitting.
10 Years Your lung cancer death rate is about half that of a smoker's. Your risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas decreases.
15 Years Your risk of coronary heart disease is back to that of a nonsmoker's.
