-Enforcement with penalties now apply-
XAVIER UNIVERSITY is now a Tobacco and Smoke free community
Xavier University President, Norman C. Francis and Student Government President, Javon Bracy, signed a resolution in October 2013 declaring that effective January 1, 2014, the university will begin to enforce the recently launched Tobacco-free policy. In implementing this policy, Xavier joins over 1200 colleges and universities across the nation and sixteen in Louisiana to ban smoking and tobacco products on their campuses.
All XULA property is tobacco-free, including cigarettes, cigars, dip, pipes, smokeless tobacco (chewing), snuff, and all other tobacco products,
and including electronic smoking devices!
For years, Xavier University has prohibited smoking in its campus building including offices, classrooms, university center, residence halls and athletic facilities. As a result of the university's continuing commitment to the health and well-being of its students, faculty and staff, this ban of smoking and use of all tobacco products is being extended to all university properties, including parking lots, and contiguous sidewalks and streets within the boundaries of Xavier University.
During the past year and half, in response to campus-wide concern, a Tobacco-Free Living/Fresh Campus committee was formed in spring 2012. The committee received funding from the Louisiana Public Health Institute and joined forces with the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-free Living. Over the past fourteen months, several student - and committee -led programs were sponsored to increase awareness on the effects of second-hand smoke and health risk factors linked to use of tobacco and developed policies to make the university a healthier place to learn, live and work. The committee also invited smokers and tobacco users to participate in a focus group and discussed the impact of transitioning to a tobacco-free campus.
Effective January 1st, adherence to this policy is designated as the responsibility of all students, faculty, staff visitors and contractors. Warnings will be issued at the first occurrence, thereafter other penalties and/or sanctions will apply. It will take all of us working together to make Xavier University a healthier community. Thank you for supporting our policy.
