CARE is a network of people and support services that are designed to provide first-year, first-generation students with assistance and resources in every area of their Xavier experience. The Program focuses on four areas that are important to your success:
- Career Readiness – ensures you are prepared to successfully transition into the workforce
- Academic Efficacy – enhances your belief that you have the necessary preparation to succeed in your college-level academic coursework
- Resilience – enhances your ability to confront and overcome any barriers to your success
- Engagement – helps you to become a part of the Xavier community such that it supports your growth and success
CARE is a free program for firstyear, first-generation students. There is no cost.

You can complete the CARE Colleague application on the Get Involved tab. Colleagues are selected at the end of each term.
CARE students are first-year, first-generation students. If this describes you, you are a CARE student.
Although CARE is for first-year, first-generation students, all students are welcome to participate in the program.
The CARE network is made up of four important groups:
- CARE Students – That’s you!
- CARE Coaches – Your CARE Coach will work to keep you motivated and connect you to the resources you need to help you meet your goals. They will also provide a level of accountability that keeps you moving towards your goals.
- CARE Colleagues – CARE Colleagues are your fellow Xavier students who have had great success in their academic pursuits and have demonstrated leadership qualities and full participation in campus life. They will provide mentorship, support and guidance to you as you navigate college life.
- CARE Circles - CARE Circles serve as spaces to build community among CARE students, which can support the formation of deep and lasting relationships.
It is for you to decide whether you identify as a first-generation college student. Xavier defines a first-generation college student as one whose parent(s)/guardian(s) did not complete a four-year college (bachelor's) degree.

Your feelings are perfectly natural, and you are not alone. You are starting on a new pathway in your life that is going to be challenging. Xavier can support you in many ways as you begin your college journey, and CARE is one of the sources of support designed specifically for first-year, first-generation college students.
The Program can support you in reaching your goals by providing you with opportunities to prepare, progress and perform in your career aspirations, academics, resilience and your connection with your Xavier community.
