Foreign Language Club
The Foreign Language Club is run by Spanish and French majors and minors and has frequent events such as dance lessons ("Chips and Salsa"), general body meetings, and culture nights. Member of the Xavier Foreign Language Club do volunteer outreach in tutoring in Spanish and French for area high school and middle school students as well as Xavier students. The Foreign Language Club welcomes all students interested in the study of any language, including less commonly taught languages at Xavier such as Sign Language, Mandarin, Latin, and Hebrew.
International Foreign Language Honor Society Beta Chapter of Phi Sigma Iota
The International Foreign Language Honor Society Lambda Beta Chapter of Phi Sigma Iota inducts Xavier students who have declared minors or majors in Spanish or French, have completed a literature class in Spanish or French, and have maintained a 3.3 average in language study and at least a 3.0 average overall. This honor society was founded by language professors at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania in 1922 and later as a national honor society at Pennsylvania State University in 1925. The Xavier Lambda Beta Chapter of Phi Sigma Iota was founded by Xavier students Patrick Jackson, Ashley Conoway, Kourtney Cooke, Mickeya Hayes, JoAnn Tran, Ava Potter, and Quiana Robinson in 2011. https://phisigmaiota.org
HONORS IN A LANGUAGE
To receive honors in a language at graduation, students must have completed a minor or major in a language, have at least a 3.5 GPA in language courses for the minor or major, have at least a 3.3 GPA overall, have taken at least two literature courses in the language with a B or better, and have taken at least 9 hours of courses in a language at Xavier.
