Single Stream Recycling

Xavier University implemented a recycling program in 2015 and it has been steadily growing. In 2019, China stopped accepting most recycling from the United States, causing many recycling facilities to close as the process became too expensive. We are happy to announce, that despite these challenges, we remain committed to reducing our landfill waste and continued recycling!

Currently, our single-stream bins accept paper, cardboard, plastics (1 and 2), and aluminum cans. Our custodial team collects the waste from the green and blue interior bins located around campus and brings the material to our four exterior dumpsters. Recycling from our dumpsters is collected twice per week and processed at a local Materials Recovery Facility in Louisiana through Waste ConnectionsThe material is turned into a range of other products, from drywall to carpets.

Using grant funding, the Office of Sustainability has placed clearly labeled recycling bins in almost every academic building on campus. With the help of Keep Louisiana Beautiful and grant funding, we have added recycling sorter stations to all residential halls in 2021.
